The responsibility for certification of death lies with the registry office in whose jurisdiction the death occurred. The death must be reported not later than the following working day.

Registration of death and issue of death certificates

Documents and data required

• Birth certificate
• Citizenship certificates (passport in case of foreign citizenship)
• Where applicable, proof of academic title
• Confirmation of residence (only if primary residence was not in Austria)

Additionally, in cases where the deceased was married, divorced or widowed:

• Marriage certificate
• Where applicable, proof of dissolution of marriage (final divorce decree, death certificate, etc.)
